I’m on the lookout for new apps everyday. Being a product person, I keenly observe the signup process, the getting started part, the overall experience of using an app.
Today, I came across a tool that’s one among several online collaboration tools. It piqued my interested so I decided to check it out. However, all my eargerness evaporated when while signing up for the trial version, I was asked to provide my billing information. As a user who just wants to try the product out-that’s what the trial version is for, right?- I was immediately curious why they were asking for my billing information when they won’t even be using it during the trial period. Furthermore, if I end up not buying the product at all, what will they do with my billing information?
I don’t know a lot about pricing models, but as far as product signups go, the barriers to entry should be lowest so that new users can get in quickly. With the process described above, the billing info requirement, when signing up for the trial version is a step that could keep prospective clients out. Unless this barrier to entry was created on purpose?
